Shopify SEO, AI and GEO: getting cited by ChatGPT

Shopify starts with solid foundations for AI: fast pages, an automatic sitemap, Product data in recent themes, and an llms.txt file served by default since May 2026. The gaps mostly come from content: product descriptions copied from the supplier, no page that answers customers' questions, no FAQ. Here are the settings to check, in order.

What is Shopify SEO, and what AI and GEO change

Shopify SEO covers the settings and content that help search engines find, understand and rank a Shopify store: titles, descriptions, product pages, collections, speed. Shopify handles much of it on its own: fast hosting, SSL certificate, sitemap, stable URLs.

GEO adds what AI platforms look at when they recommend a product or a store: product pages that answer buyers' questions precisely, accurate Product data, verifiable reviews, and a store that is cited elsewhere.

What the iasyo audit checks on a Shopify store

The audit recognises Shopify and your theme, then checks:

  • the indexing of your pages in Google and Bing;
  • AI crawlers' access to the store;
  • the structured data for your products and your business;
  • whether your content can be read without JavaScript, including content added by your apps;
  • direct answers, FAQs and page freshness;
  • the llms.txt file, which carries little weight in the score;
  • language versions, if your store sells in several languages.

Each recommendation then tells you which screen to open in your Shopify admin.

Shopify SEO, AI and GEO: the settings, in order

1Remove the store's password

While it's being set up, a Shopify store is often protected by a password: the Private mode setting, in Online Store, then Preferences. As long as it's active, neither search engines nor AI platforms can see your pages. Remove it as soon as you launch, then check, in the Search Console settings, that the generative AI setting doesn't exclude your website.

2Let AI crawlers read the store

Shopify creates a default robots.txt, which you can see at yourshop.co.uk/robots.txt. According to Shopify, it doesn't block AI crawlers. To edit it, you need to add a robots.txt.liquid template to the theme: Online Store, then, on your theme, Edit code, Add a new template, then robots. Shopify warns that this is an unsupported customisation, which its support team can't help with, and that a mistake can result in the loss of all traffic: keep the existing rules and only add your lines. The AI crawlers and robots.txt guide gives ready-to-copy rules.

3Fill in titles and descriptions

For the home page: Online Store, then Preferences, in the Social sharing image and SEO section. For each product or collection: at the bottom of its editing screen, in the Search engine listing section, click the pencil icon. For each page: in the Search engine listing preview section, click Edit website SEO. One unique title per page, with what your customers actually type: “Bespoke solid oak worktop” rather than “Harrogate model”.

4Check the structured data

Recent Shopify themes produce Product data for each product page, or ProductGroup when the product has variants, as well as Article for the blog, using Shopify's structured_data filter. Test a product page with Google's Rich Results Test. Often missing: the business's full contact details, the returns policy, delivery costs and customer ratings, which a reviews app usually adds. For a physical shop, add LocalBusiness data in the theme or with an app.

5Write product pages that answer

When a buyer asks an AI “Which worktop should I choose for a kitchen that gets heavy use?”, it cites the product pages that answer: material, dimensions, care, lead time, after-sales service, recommended use. Avoid descriptions copied from the supplier, found on dozens of other websites. Add an FAQ to key product pages and advice pages to the blog. Check that the reviews and FAQs added by your apps appear in the page's code, and not only after the JavaScript has loaded.

6Look at your llms.txt file

Since May 2026, Shopify has served a file by default at yourshop.co.uk/llms.txt, a copy of an agents.md file that it generates for AI agents. To customise it, add an agents.md.liquid template to the theme, or llms.txt.liquid if the two files need to differ. Its effect on AI answers hasn't been demonstrated: only spend time on it after the rest.

7Make the store known to Google and Bing

Shopify creates the sitemap at yourshop.co.uk/sitemap.xml. Submit it in Search Console and in Bing Webmaster Tools. To appear in Google's Shopping results, connect the store to Google Merchant Center with the Google & YouTube sales channel: Google lists these product feeds among the ways to be visible in its AI features.

Your products in ChatGPT: the Agentic Storefronts channel

Shopify offers a sales channel, Agentic Storefronts, that makes your products available, with up-to-date prices and stock, in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google's AI Mode, Gemini and Meta. ChatGPT and Copilot receive them through Shopify Catalog; Google's AI Mode and Gemini, through the Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center. The channel is activated automatically for eligible stores; you'll find it in your Shopify admin, under Sales channels, then Agentic.

Three points to know, according to Shopify's Help Center in September 2026. In ChatGPT, buyers complete their order at your store's checkout, opened within ChatGPT. On the other channels, buying without leaving the AI is being rolled out gradually; in June 2026, Shopify reserved it for US buyers. Finally, the channel doesn't go through your robots.txt: blocking a crawler doesn't stop this sharing; you can, however, remove ChatGPT's or Copilot's access to your products in the channel settings. This channel doesn't replace the rest: to be recommended in the UK and Ireland, your product pages and your store must convince the AI as they would a customer.

Which apps for SEO, AI and GEO on Shopify?

At the start, often none: the theme and the admin cover the essentials. A customer reviews app, which produces the rating markup, adds the most. Beyond that, a structured data or FAQ app can make up for an older theme.

Choose apps that display their content in the page's code, and don't install two that do the same thing: their data would contradict each other. iasyo has no commercial relationship with these apps.

Frequently asked questions: Shopify SEO, AI and GEO

How do I improve SEO on my Shopify store?

Remove the password, fill in a unique title and description for each page, write product pages that answer buyers' questions, check the Product data and submit the sitemap in Search Console. The same foundations help AI platforms cite your products.

How do I edit robots.txt on Shopify?

By adding a robots.txt.liquid template to the theme: Online Store, then, on your theme, Edit code, Add a new template, then robots. It's a customisation that Shopify Support doesn't cover: keep the existing rules.

Does Shopify block ChatGPT?

No. According to Shopify, its default robots.txt doesn't block AI crawlers. Still check yours, especially if a developer has already modified the theme.

Do I need an llms.txt file on Shopify?

Shopify has served one by default since May 2026. You can customise it in the theme, but its effect hasn't been demonstrated and Google says it doesn't need it.

Can my Shopify products appear in ChatGPT?

Yes, in two ways: when ChatGPT cites your product pages while searching the web, if its OAI-SearchBot crawler can read them; and through the Agentic Storefronts channel, which sends it your catalogue, with buyers completing their order at your store's checkout.
