  • Online shop: Product, on each product page.
  • Questions page: FAQ, on the page that shows these questions and their answers.
  • Blog or guide: Article and Author, on each article.
  • All pages: Breadcrumb, if it's shown on the page.

JSON-LD, the format Google recommends

Structured data can be written in JSON-LD, microdata or RDFa. Google recommends JSON-LD: a separate block of code, which doesn't touch the page's visible text and is pasted in one place. The generator only writes this format.

What the markup does

It describes your name, your address, your products or your questions unambiguously, in a vocabulary that all search engines understand. It can make a page eligible for a rich result; Google then decides whether to show it. And, as Google states, no special markup is needed to appear in its AI features; markup mainly helps you state accurate facts, which your text should also state.

Frequently asked questions: schema markup, SEO, AI and GEO

What are the structured data formats?

There are three for the web: JSON-LD, microdata and RDFa. Google reads all three and recommends JSON-LD, the easiest to add and maintain.

What is a schema markup generator?

A tool that writes the markup code for you. Here, you choose a type and fill in a form, and the generator produces the JSON-LD code following schema.org and Google's guidelines, ready to paste into your page.

Where do I paste the JSON-LD code?

In the code of the page concerned, usually in the head section. The steps under the code show where for your platform.

Does schema markup give me stars or a rich result?

It makes the page eligible; Google then decides what to show. And reviews that a business publishes about itself don't earn stars.

Do AI platforms read structured data?

Google states that no special markup is needed for its AI features, and other AI platforms document no specific use. Markup remains the clearest way to state your information; it doesn't replace clear text.
