Free SEO, AI and GEO toolMeta description checker

Paste a meta description, or a page's address: the checker measures its length in characters and in pixels, shows where Google will cut it off on desktop and on mobile, and checks that it contains the target keyword without repeating the title. How to use the checker

  1. Paste your meta description, or the page's address to read it directly.
  2. Add the title and the target keyword if you want to compare them.
  3. Adjust the text until it displays in full on desktop as well as on mobile.

Meta description length: how long should it be?

Google says so: there's no limit, but the snippet is cut off to fit the width of the screen. In practice, 120 to 155 characters are shown in full most of the time. Put the essentials first: that's what stays visible if Google cuts it off.

Writing a description that makes people want to click

  • Summarise what the page offers, not what your business does in general.
  • Give a precise fact: a lead time, a starting price, an area covered, an after-sales service.
  • Write a different description for each page.
  • Include the target keyword naturally, without repeating it.

Does Google rewrite it?

Often. Google creates its snippets primarily from the page content, and uses the meta description when it describes the page better for the search being made. A precise description that's faithful to the page is therefore more likely to be used as it is.

Frequently asked questions: meta description, SEO, AI and GEO

What is a meta description?

It's a short summary of the page, placed in its code. It isn't shown on the page, but Google may use it under the title of your result.

How many characters should a meta description have?

There's no official length. Aim for 120 to 155 characters so that it displays in full, and check it in pixels with the tool, because where it's cut off depends on the screen.

Does the meta description help rankings?

Google doesn't present it as a ranking factor. Its role is to make people want to click on your result rather than on a competitor's.

Do AI platforms read the meta description?

No AI platform documents any specific use of this tag. To answer, they rely mainly on page content: that's what to work on first.

Does each page need a different description?

Yes, Google recommends it: identical or similar descriptions don't help searchers when several of your pages appear in the results.
